We measure the weight of the fleece fabric in grams per meters squared and to simplify things we can break down into three main categories when we check the different fleeces in the market :
The fleece fabric provide insulation by trapping the air in the space formed by its texture and your body heats this trapped air and it is the reason why you feel warm when you wear your fleece jacket ,vest or pullover.
The weight of the fleece fabric is very related with the warmth and breathability of your clothing ;
therefore according to your needs you should choose the suitable one to have more comfort during your outdoor activities.
Let’s go in more details :
1. Lightweight Fleece Fabric — 100 g/m2
As you can imagine it is a thinner material and fleece that’s lightweight is often more packable, breathable, however provide lowest level of insulation.
It is opitimum when your body generates lots of body heat like high level hiking ,running or biking.
2. Midweight Fleece Fabric — 200 g/m2
Midweight is the most versatile and highly used fleece fabric type. They breathe decently but still provide a fair amount of warmth .
Commonly used as a mid-layer over your base layer ( like warmer ,tshirt etc. ) and under a shell (like water proof jacket , softshell etc.).
It is also possible to use them as an outer layer in moderate temperatures . They are ideal for activities like hiking and mountaineering and also for everyday usage.
3. Heavyweight Fleece Fabric — 300 g/m2
Heavyweight fleece is not used as much as before by outdoor enthusiasts. Usually suitable to be worn as an outer layer in cold and dry weather while making stationary outdoor activities like camping .
When the weather is rainy , it is hard to wear it under a shell ( water-proof jacket etc. ) due to its thickness. When warmth represents a larger concern than weight and breathability – it can be a choice.
We use Midweight Fleece Fabric– 200 g/m2 for Sivugin Outdoor Fleece Collection Models ( Fleece Jackets , ¼ Zip Fleeces and Vests ) due to its versatility.
They are thick enough to keep you warm on a chilly day but can be worn also under a shell for added warmth in the winter.
