Co-owning a whitewater adventure company is hard. It may seem glamorous at first look, but it’s months and months of hard work, long hours, complicated logistics, and physical & emotional demands on the staff, the guides, & their families. Add the complications of the COVID-19 era and there are moments when it feels impossible. ⁣ ⁣ But last week, the stars aligned just so and we got to go on a 6-day trip with family, friends, and crew that we adore on the Main Salmon. And for 6 days, totally off the grid in the largest wilderness area in the lower 48, I was reminded why I say yes to this life, why the hard work and logistics and weird pandemic policies are worth it. I got to watch my kids enjoy their dad’s favorite place in the whole world for the first time - watch them kayak, catch fish, jump cliffs, swim, dance, laugh, fall asleep under the stars without a tent, be inspired, find new courage, and experience intimacy with God’s creation in a way you can’t get anywhere else. ⁣ ⁣ Payday looks different on the river. ⁣ ⁣ And the only reason I used my phone for the whole week was to capture the joy of my children. It’s both exhilarating and calming to realize that the world could completely change while you’re on the river and you would have no idea. It strips you of the illusion of control, and asks you to be present to your life & the people in it. As it turns out, hitting “refresh” on The NY Times website doesn’t change my reality, but a cold swim in the river at the end of a hot day sure does. ⁣ ⁣ The trip wasn’t perfect, but it was perfect in its imperfections & the perspective it offered me. It brought my kids and my husband so much joy and that’s it’s own perfection. And these photos are such a special reminder, a glimpse into this beautiful life we get to live, and they make me grateful.⁣ @orangetorpedotrips
